Part One: EWoF Insights and Review
Sep 27th, 2006 by michelle

Today I began reading “Encountering Women of Faith” which has been complied by the Saint Catherine’s Vision, “a group of women graduates of Orthodox Theological Schools that have come together (with the blessing of SCOBA) to help harness the skills and knowledge of our women graduates in the service of the Church. A planning committee has been established and has been working for over three years. The goal of the committee is to identify women graduates, solicit their interests and participation, and to select and prioritize projects that will benefit the Church.”
Each chapter is written by a different woman who carefully explored the life or lives of certain Orthodox women saints. It contains the stories of St. Susanna, St. Elizabeth Feodorovna, the New Maryr, St. Melania the Younger (the reason that I purchased the book), St. Olympias the Deaconess, St. Xenia of Petersburg and Fool for Christ, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Catherine, and the Myrrh-bearing Women told by women, who also share their stories. The authors explore not only the lives of these women, but also how the saints’ lives affectd the authors. Each section follows strict guidelines as presented at Orthodox Women Writers’ Retreat in August of 2004. Though I wanted to skip ahead and read the sections about Melania the Younger, the editor of the book urged its readers to follow the sequence of the book, for it will be the most clear in this prescribed order.
In subsequent posts, I will examining and detailing the lives of the saints discussed, as well as reviewing the book as I read. Please stay tuned for an entry on St. Susanna from the book of Daniel.
