Part Four: EWOF- St. Melania the Younger of Rome

When I first discovered St. Melania, I was immediately drawn to her, and now I know why: she is a “control freak”, or at least that is what Eleni C. Simmons says about her in this chapter of the book.
I can relate to that!
I found this section of the book interesting, not only because I am fond of St. Melania, but because I learned several new things about her:
- she and her husband visited people in prison and comforted them
- they rescued many from danger by ransoming captives
- she ministered to the spiritually sick and helped to convert them to Christianity
- she was aquainted with St. Augustine while in northern Africa
- she sold several estates and used the money to build monestaries
- she secluded herself for 14 years
- she knew St. Jerome, introduced by her cousin Paula
- after her husband died, she stayed by his grave for 4 years
- her annual income was the equivalent of about $20 million today
What inspires me most about St. Melania is that she never used her money to make her own life comfortable. I know that I have not been a good steward of my money. I hope that her life will inspire me to use my money for the betterment of the lives others and not my own.
Simmons says that “true philanthropy is a love of human kind, especially as manifested in donations of money, property, time or talents, to needy people or for socially useful purposes”
to show kindness to the poor,
to aid the homeless and help the helpless.
