Prayer for a Woman Who Has Aborted a Child
May 19th, 2008 by michelle
I have a dear friend whose life is consumed by the guilt, grief and sorrow caused by the abortions she had at a young age. She grieves the loss of her children- on due dates, on what would have been birthdates, and in watching other children grow. She misses the milestones that her children may have had. She has never been able to make confession in the way that Orthodox do. I deeply desire for her to be free of her guilt, and I know that repenting before the icon of Christ followed by absolution made by a priest would make such as profound difference in her life.
I found this icon online today and then went searching for a prayer to go with it. Click on the icon to see the entirety of it. It is interesting, but I don’t know anything about it (an explanation can now be found in the comments). The following prayer is from The Book of Needs of the Holy Orthodox Church.

When I was at our closest women’s monastery a month ago, they had an akathist to the mother of God for a woman who has aborted a child in the guest house. It is by the same monastery that prints the little akathist to the mother of God for our children (they print a number of different akathists). I believe it is St. Paisius Monastery in Arizona?!? That would be perfect with the icon (I have seen that icon before… actually, a few years ago at the same monastery I was visiting, they had a booklet/article on that icon).
[...] Obama and Moloch. (HT:Irenaeus) And an Orthodox prayer for the women who’ve aborted a child. [...]
I have seen the Akathist that Christina references as well. Prayers.
I have this icon at home, I found it awhile back online as well. Someone explained it to me at the time. May it be blessed for me to re-tell.
*Christ holds a scroll that reads “Let the children come to Me” and gives His blessing
*the woman in the bottom left corner is the woman who does not abort; she is an unmarried mother and the child is her cross to bear
*next to her is “the blessed family” a husband and wife raising their children together
*the medusa like queen is called the “New Herod” which is abortion, the girls bringing their babies to her are (starting with the one with fishnet stockings and pink hair) “love of fornication”, “ignorance”, “carelessness” and “hard-hearted”; they bring their children to her through the doctor depicted directly behind her (notice the money in his pocket)
*the angel above the abortion is mourning the souls of the children
*Panagia (who is the milk-giver) is shown nursing the Christ child; St. Stylianos is next to her with a child since he is known to be a protector of children and holds a scroll that reads “protect your children-they are the gift of Christ”
*the girl down in the bottom center who is bleeding is one who aborts but repents and prays for the soul of her child; she too will be forgiven
