Going Green
Jul 10th, 2008 by michelle
We’ve been “going green” for several years now- basically since I found out I was pregnant with my son.
Here are a few ways that we started:
- Washing our clothes in cold water
- Making natural cleaners
- Using cleaning products without a lot of (or any) chemicals (laundry detergent, hand soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc)
- Buying organic and natural foods
- Using less plastic and more permanent solutions (I love pyrex!)
- Recycling or re-using (glass bottles are perfect for storing leftovers, especially soup. And you can’t imagine all the possibilities for crafts that you can make with “garbage”.)
If you have more easy ideas for going free, feel free to leave a comment.
from Kristina:
Some blogs suggest sewing simple cloth napkins, using rags to wipe spills, using hankies, etc., to cut down on paper waste. When we buy new furniture, we insist that it NOT be sprayed with stain resistant chemicals, which seep into our skin and bodies. We also buy low-VOC paint (volatile organic compounds) when we paint - it’s more expensive, but regular paint in the house can give off fumes for 2 years - ick.
a tip from me: We do not microwave or freeze things in plastic- some research has shown that dioxins are released this way, but the FDA says that it isn’t enough to do any harm. I’d rather not risk it! So, if you use a microwave, heat things in glass containers. I would rather play it safe!

I love pyrex, too.
What do you use for natural cleaning products?
