I use my own cloth totes. I’ve collected them over the years from various conferences my husband or I have attended. I keep them in the trunk of my car so they are handy every time I go shopping. I will admit that I do use the plastic shopping bags as trash can liners, so when the pile gets low and I go food shopping, I request plastic bags for a few groceries. I prefer paper bags to plastic but for some reason the stores don’t readily offer them.

I remember coming back to America after spending a year carring groceries home in my backpack. In Ireland they charge .15 euro (close to 20-25 cents) per plastic bag. I got so used to just carrying odds and ends that people in America would look at me strangely when I said, “I don’t need a bag. I can just carry it.”
