Our Children’s Icon Corner
Sep 4th, 2008 by michelle
We recently acquired a few small icons for the kids’ room. I decided that I wanted to have a little icon corner to put them in. Here is how I made the little display case:
- I took the bottom part of a shoe box and cut it into two sections: one about 2/3 of the box and the other 1/3.
- I then cut the sides at an angle to give it a nicer appearance.
- I painted both pieces separately and let them dry.
- I took the smaller of the two pieces and placed it inside of the larger one, creating a little shelf to place their prayer book on. I stapled it in place.
- I found icons of my children’s patron saints online, printed them out, backed them with carboard and glued them to the display.
- The shoebox came with a hole in it, so I decided to put a candle in it.
- I hung the cross on a little nail so that they kids could take it down if they wanted to.
This is sturdy enough to be hung on a wall, but this was the best location for it in the kids’ room. This cost me no money at all because I used things around the house. I love re-purposing things and, especially, turning them into something that can be used every day.

Michelle, that is lovely! And, it seems so simple. Thanks for sharing it with us.
You are so brilliant! I love this!
That is made from a shoebox??? Unbelievable - very cool!
Very very nice! I like repurposing too and this is quite creative!
Good job Mom!
