The Update on My Mom
Sep 24th, 2008 by michelle
My mom went to see the orthopedic oncologist today.
This is what we know:
- The tumor is IN the bone
- The bonescan showed other areas in her body that are “inflammed” (her ribs and shoulder blade)- this could mean more tumors
- The tumor is not removeable, which means she will need radiation and/or chemotherapy to shrink the tumor. Removing it would completely damage the hip.
- It was caught early and there is little bone damage thus far.
- She will need a biopsy, but in order to do so, they will more than likely need to do surgery to get to the location of the tumor (it is deep inside the hip).
- What they have already found is non-descriptive. Therefore:
She will be having an MRI of the ribcage and shoulder area to determine what is causing the “inflammation”.
She will be having a CAT scan of her entire body to look for other tumors because the cancer could have passed through the bloodstream into her bones.
The oncologist is giving her films to a Bone Specialist, who will review them and determine where and how (surgery or needle) the biopsy will be done. If there are other tumors, he will do a biopsy of those rather than opening up her hip.
Other possiblities:
- Stress fracture in the hip- Doctor says this is NOT likely, but still could be a possibility
- Infectious Process in the bone- not as likely as a tumor. The doctor did not discuss how they would treat this.
- Tumor- Cancer- If this is really bone cancer, the doctor told my mom that she is in trouble. But I am not sure how much more he told her.
My mom will have the MRI and CAT scans done immediately. She will find out the results as soon as possible. She has an appointment with the Bone Specialist next Thursday, but if they find something really bad before that, they will treat her immediately.
Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers for my mom and our whole family. It is especially difficult for us being so far away.
I will update again when I know more.

I know I haven’t commented but you and your family are in our prayers.
Praying for you and your mom, Rebeca
Thanks for the update, and I hope you will continue to keep us promptly posted. Hang on tightly to the Lord during this frightening time, that He may give you His own strength.
Many, many prayers will be arising for your mother and you and your whole family.
Michelle, what is your mom’s first name ?
I will ask for her to be prayed for at the Shrine in Walsingham.
St Nicholai Velimirovitch himself prayed at Walsingham……http://thegardenwindow.blogspot.com/2006/10/even-more.html
Lord Have Mercy, my friend. We will add you to our evening prayer list.
